Electrolytic coatings of nickel followed by chromium are produced by first using a nickel bath containing a suspension of solid material having conductive properties and a particle size of 20 to 100 angstroms, and then coating with chromium from a chromium bath. Preferably the suspended material is carbon used in amount of 0.1 to 30 grams per litre of the nickel bath.
