METHOD OF DIFFERENTIATING USES OF SOIL AND QUANTIFYING VEGETATIVE COVER BY MEANS OF REMOTE SENSING WITH AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

The invention relates to a method of differentiating uses of soil and quantifying vegetative cover by means of remote sensing with aerial photography. The invention is suitable for use in agriculture and, more specifically, by enterprises providing technical assistance in the field of agriculture or the environment or in relation to public or private agro-environmental audits. The invention essentially consists in using remote sensing techniques in order to perform precise, large-scale monitoring of agricultural producers using conservation techniques with ligneous crops. Said techniques consist in maintaining vegetative covers between windrows of trees in order to reduce erosion of the soil, which is one of the most serious environmental problems in the Mediterranean basin. The inventive method provides a highly-precise tool having the following three objectives, namely: 1) to determine the existence or absence of vegetative covers; 2) to estimate the percentage of cover occupied by said vegetative covers on farm land; and 3) to determine entitlement or non-entitlement to aid/subsidies in accordance with the regulations of various different public authorities, which are intended to promote the implementation of conservation techniques.
