Prior to spectrometric investigation by solid phase extraction (SPE), a plurality of samples concentrated in cartridges 5 positioned in a carrier 4 are dried together of a solvent by dividing a flow of heated gas e.g. nitrogen into gas flows, passing each flow through a resistance (14, fig 3) which is greater than the flow resistance of the cartridge, and then passing each flow through a cartridge. The flow is divided in a manifold or pre-chamber 6, and an elastic sealing plate 8 and the carrier 4 have passages to allow gas flow. The carrier 4 is loaded into a drying chamber 2, and lifted into an upper position in which the cartridges abut the sealing plate 8 to form a gas-tight seal. The flow resistances all the same resistance to promote uniform flow through samples with differing flow resistance. A vacuum pump at an outlet 10 can suck gas from the cartridges through underpressure. The cartridges may have a filter material contained between permeable cover plates (16,17, fig 5). |
