PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a serial access memory in which a chip size is reduced and process development cost is reduced. SOLUTION: In this serial access memory having: write registers T1, T2, ..., for temporarily storing data; a memory array having memory cells 11 and a plurality of memory columns 10 connecting the memory cells 11 by word lines WL1, WL2, ...; and a second switch SW1 connected between the write registers T1, T2, ..., and the memory columns 10 to conduct the write registers T1, T2, ..., and the memory columns 10 in response to second selection signals WTR 1 to 4, the write registers T1, T2, ..., are connected to the prescribed number of memory columns 10, and the second switch SW1 is made to conduct the write registers T1 and T2 and only one of the prescribed number of memory columns 10 in response to the second selection signals WTR 1 to 4.
