Security document, e.g. banknote, passport etc., comprises a security paper and a mark produced by a laser, in which the security paper has sub-section(s) with a coating and the mark extends over the boundary between the coating and security paper. Independent claims are also included for the following: 1. the security paper per se; 2. methods of marking (a) a security document, (b) security paper for such a document.
