PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochemical display element which is flexible and in which no short circuit, leakage of electrolyte solution and so on occurs, when an external force such as compression is applied thereto, even if no structural member such as a spacer is used. SOLUTION: The electrochemical display element has an electrochemical display medium comprising the electrolyte solution retained in a composite body composed of at least an organic polymer selected from a group, consisting of polyamide, polyurethane and polyurea and at least an inorganic compound selected from among silica and metal oxides between two sheets of substrates having electrodes and placed opposite to each other with the electrodes kept inside; wherein the substrates are flexible substrates, the composite body has a component with pulp like shape with 30μm or smaller fiber diameter and 10 or larger aspect ratio, and 400-1,500 mass parts of the electrolyte solution are retained with respect to 100 mass parts of the composite body.
