PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device which can secure brightness even when the oscillation of an inverter circuit 1 stops at the life end period. SOLUTION: The discharge lighting device is equipped with the inverter circuit 1 to light a discharge lamp 15, a microcomputer 2 to control the inverter 1, a protection circuit 3 to stop the oscillation of the inverter circuit at the discharge lamp life end period, and a safety bulb switch 45 to light a safety bulb 4 in response to the microcomputer 2 at the stopping.
