PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a PWM cycloconverter that does not cause excessive compensation even in the vicinity of a zero current and performs switching operation so that a commutation error is reduced. SOLUTION: The PWM cycloconverter outputs arbitrary AC and DC voltages by directly connecting the phase of an AC power supply 1 and the phase of an output side by bidirectional switches having self-extinction abilities, and by PWM-controlling the AC and DC voltages by a controller 7 according to a output voltage command, comprises a current detection device 4 that detects an output current of the PWM cycloconverter, and a current value detector that can detect an absolute value of a current on the basis of a current signal outputted from the current detection device, simultaneously turns off the precedently turned-on bidirectional switch when the absolute value of the output current of the PWM cycloconverter is not larger than a given value, and simultaneously turns on the bidirectional switch that should be turned of next, after the lapse of a certain time.
