PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine having an automatic thread guide operation and a manual thread guide operation, and allowing the manual thread guide operation without opening a sewing machine cover by changing a position of a thread take-up lever. SOLUTION: The sewing machine includes a first thread preparation passage 30 for guiding thread for preparing an upper thread 10 extending from a thread piece 9 for being guided by an automatic thread guide device 16 and a first thread guide groove 31 formed at the sewing machine cover 35 so as to introduce the upper thread 10 to the first thread preparation passage 30, and a second thread preparation passage 32 for manually guiding the upper thread 10 extending from the thread piece 9 to a plurality of thread guide portions and a second thread guide groove 33 formed at the sewing machine cover 35 so as to introduce the upper thread to the second thread preparation passage 32. The position of the thread take-up lever 13 is changed in the range of reciprocation and swinging motion thereof, so that both of the thread guide to the first thread preparation passage 30 and the thread guide to the second thread preparation passage 32 are allowed.
