PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus with which reductions in the size and cost are attained by optimizing an image color superimposition step when images corresponding to two sheets of paper are formed on an intermediate transfer body, thereby reducing the circumferential length of the intermediate body, also rigidity is improved by the reduction of the circumferential length of the intermediate transfer body, further, color misalignment, etc. are restricted by a decrease in elongation, and high image quality is, therefore, attained. SOLUTION: In the case where images corresponding to two sheets of recording paper are formed on the intermediate transfer body, the apparatus forms a visible image for the first color corresponding to an image for the first sheet of recording paper that is the front one of the two sheets of recording paper disposed one in front of the other on the intermediate transfer body in the direction of its circumference. Thereafter, a visible image corresponding to an image for the second sheet of recording paper that is the back one is not formed. Instead, a visible image for the n-th color (n is an integer not smaller than 2 but not larger than N) corresponding to an image for the first sheet of paper is formed. Then, a visible image for the (n-1)th color corresponding to an image for the second sheet of paper is formed in the same color. Also, the visible image for the first color corresponding to the image for the first sheet of paper and a visible image for the N-th color corresponding to an image for the second sheet of paper are formed in the same color.
