PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide binding direction determining method and device for determining vertical binding and horizontal binding automatically with high precision. SOLUTION: In this binding direction determining method for determining binding direction of a booklet-like passbook 10, thickness of the passbook 10 is detected in at least two sections holding a predetermined interval in the direction of width crossing the direction of conveyance in the passbook 10 orthogonally to determine binding direction of the passbook 10 based on data related to the thickness.
