PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ring type hydraulic tensioner for preventing abnormal noises such as fluttering noises at starting an engine by using a simple backstop mechanism for receiving an impact load from a plunger at starting the engine while reducing machining accuracy and machining labor during machining or assembling parts. SOLUTION: The ring type hydraulic tensioner 100 comprises the columnar plunger 120 slidably protruded from a plunger storage hole 111 of a housing body 110, a plunger energizing spring 130 for energizing the columnar plunger 120, and a check valve unit 140 for preventing the back flow of pressure oil. Into a cut-off annular groove 122 formed in the outer periphery of the columnar plunger 120, a C-type ring 150 is fitted for energizing the inner peripheral wall of the plunger storage hole 111 to be diameter-enlarged in the state that predetermined clearances X2, X1 are kept in the directions of the groove width and the groove bottom of the annular groove 122.
