PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a structure of controlling a control valve for controlling a variable speed ratio of a toroidal type continuously variable transmission with high accuracy using a stepping motor 11 similar to the conventional one. SOLUTION: This continuously variable transmission has a function of converting the rotating state of an output shaft 34 to normal rotation and reverse rotation with a stop state inserted between them while an input shaft 1 is still rotated in one direction. The drive of the stepping motor 11 is performed by 1-2 phase excitation in the case where the variable speed ratio of the toroidal type continuously variable transmission 21 is in the neighborhood of a value for stopping the output shaft 34 while the input shaft 1 is still rotated in one direction, whereby the degree of a change in the variable speed ratio by each step can be lowered. In a range away from the neighborhood, one of one phase excitation, two-phase excitation and 1-2 phase excitation is selected according to the magnitude of shifting amount and the required variable speed.
