PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus of a 4-channel division type wherein pixels are divided into two of, a first half and a second half in addition to 2 division of even number and odd number pixels, and the appearance of a linear density difference of information in a subscanning direction in the middle part of the main scanning direction is prevented to the utmost, or the density difference is made inconspicuous. SOLUTION: For further dividing an even number pixel group and an odd number group that have been divided into two into a former half and a latter half, respectively, a dividing position of each of even number pixel group analog shift registers 204, 206 and odd number pixel group analog shift registers 203, 205, that is the number of output pixels to be divided, is variably and freely set by a pixel number setting circuit 213, thus preventing a linear density variation from being generated in a sub-scanning direction at the center of a main scanning direction, or thus making the density difference hardly conspicuous.
