PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop a piston at a proper position when an engine stops automatically to restart the engine securely by a simple configuration. SOLUTION: This engine starter constituted to stop the engine automatically when automatic stop conditions set in advance of the engine are satisfied and restart the engine automatically when restart conditions of the engine are satisfied is provided with an automatic stop control means 43 for setting target rotation speed of the engine when stopping fuel injection to a value higher than usual idle rotation speed to stop the engine automatically in a uniform combustion form of the engine and setting target rotation speed of the engine when stopping fuel injection to a value lower than the target rotation speed in the uniform combustion form to stop fuel injection after the target rotation speed is continued for a fixed period of time and stop the engine automatically in a stratified combustion form of the engine.
