A film unwinding station(2) is followed by a film forming and foaming area(5) incorporating a film section preforming station(11) with a preforming punch(14) and a negative tool(15) with a grained surface. A rotating table(7) supports lower tools(8) incorporating negative tools with cover plates(10). A foaming station(16) meters foam onto a preformed film section in each lower tool. The film unwinding station(2) is followed by a film preheating station(3) and/or a heating station(4). Openings in the negative tool(15) are connected to a vacuum source to hold preformed film in place. Cover plates(10) for each lower tool have a second tool punch(19) on the underside for molding foam onto the rear of the film. The rotating table(7) is located at a foam curing station in which each lower tool is heated. Residual film left after cutting out film sections passes on to a film wind-up station(6). Opposite the rotating table there is a demolding station and a guide for returning tool cover plates to the foaming station extends between the demolding and foaming stations. An independent claim is included for a process for manufacturing a foamed plastic component with a grained surface which involves: a) forming a grained section of a plastic film(23) using a negative tool; b) coating the inner side of the film section with polymer foam.
