PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a diffraction grating having a flat response and high cross talk performance. SOLUTION: In a plurality of optical paths of the diffraction grating, an optical path length L<SB>i</SB>along the propagation direction of light beams is set by L<SB>i</SB>=näl<SB>o</SB>+(i-1)l+Δl<SB>i</SB>} where n is a refractive index, l<SB>o</SB>is a common optical path length, l is a fundamental difference optical path length andΔl<SB>i</SB>is a minute optical path length in a region. When m is set as an integer within the range of 1 to M, the plurality of the optical paths includes at least equal to or more than two continuous optical paths having mutually different signs onΔl<SB>m</SB>andΔl<SB>m+1</SB>.
