PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation apparatus and a map display method which display maps in forms adapted to respective characteristics of a city area and a country area. SOLUTION: A map display area is determined as a city area or a country area in accordance with the number of building figures being within an area corresponding to the map display area, out of building figures representing buildings, houses, etc. in a map. When a country area is determined, building figures and the other figures constituting the map are drawn with a color set according to a color pallet for daytime country to generate a map image (a). A set of warm colors is used as the set of colors to be assigned to respective color numbers in the color pallet for daytime country. When a city area is determined, respective figures are drawn with a color set according to a color pallet for daytime city to generate a map image (b).
