PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus by which an original manuscript can be closely fitted immediately above a reading sensor and excellently transferred even when the image of a thick material as an original manuscript is read. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus has a driven roller which is provided so as to press a face to be read of the original manuscript in the direction of a close contact sensor from the back side of the face to be read of the original manuscript, and to be made to follow the original manuscript to be transferred. A member for supporting the driven roller is constituted by movably providing it so as to be close/away to/from the close contact sensor. Therefore, the original manuscript can be closely fitted to a contact glass of an image reader and excellently transferred even if it is a thick original manuscript. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
