PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape medium having a high track density of≥50 tracks/mm in a tape width direction and≤5μm off-track margin and capable of securing stable recording and reproducing characteristics having reduced off-track even when a dimension change amount permitted to the maximum is small to be≤0.10% as the dimension change amount in the width direction of the tape itself caused by environmental factors of humidity and a temperature change, a tension change, a creep and the like. SOLUTION: When a Young's modulus in the width direction of a non-magnetic substrate 1 and a Young's modulus in the width direction of a back layer 4 are defined as X and Y, respectively, X is 850 Kg/mm<SP>2</SP>or more or when X is less than 850 Kg/mm<SP>2</SP>, X×Y is 6×10<SP>5</SP>or more.
