The preparation of a mixture of quaternary ammonium compounds useful as metal corrosion inhibitor in aqueous acid solutions involves: (a) contacting the still bottoms residue produced in the distillation of quinoline from coal tar with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature and for time sufficient to oligomerise aromatic amines contained therein and (b) reacting the bottoms residue containing oligomerised amines with a benzylhalide at temperature and time sufficient to form a mixture of quaternary ammonium compounds. A metal corrosion inhibited aqueous acid solution comprises water, an acid and an effective amount of the above inhibitor. A method for protecting a metal surface from corrosion when contacted by an aqueous acid solution using the above inhibitor is also claimed.
