<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable recording and reproduction with light in a multi-wavelength range and to reduce the cost by size reduction. <P>SOLUTION: A pickup device 13 includes an optical system wherein at least three components, i.e. a light source 10 capable of emitting laser light in a multi-wavelength range, a collimator lens 102 adaptive to the multi-wavelength range, and an objective 103 adaptive to the multi-wavelength range are arranged in this order almost in parallel. A beam diameter converting element driving part 107 puts a beam diameter converting element 106 in and out of the optical path 105 of the optical system to control the power of the optical system. Consequently, the power of the optical system is adjusted to the best power of laser light in each wavelength range at each time.
