A high-quality large-capacity magnetic recording medium enabling high-density high-speed recording, excellent in overwritability, and having uniform characteristics. The magnetic recording medium comprises a substrate and a porous layer where a large number of pores extend generally perpendicularly to the substrate. A soft- magnetic layer and a ferromagnetic layer are formed in this order from the substrate in each pores. (1) The thickness of the ferromagnetic layer is equal to less than that of the soft-magnetic layer, or (2) the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer is 1/3 to 3 times the minimum bit length determined by the linear recording density used during recording. A method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium of the invention includes a porous layer forming step of forming a porous layer by forming a porous-layer-forming material layer on a substrate and subjecting the porous-layer- forming material layer to a pore-forming treatment so as to form a large number of pores extending generally perpendicularly to the substrate surface, a soft-magnetic layer forming step of forming a soft- magnetic layer inside each of the pores, and a ferromagnetic layer forming step of forming a ferromagnetic layer on the soft-magnetic layer in each pore.
