PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a hair cosmetic which can impart excellent tension and stiffness to hair not having the tension and the stiffness, and to provide a method for treating hair. SOLUTION: This hair cosmetic (the first embodiment) comprises the first agent comprising an alkoxysilane (1): R<SP>1</SP><SB>p</SB>Si(OR<SP>2</SP>)<SB>4-p</SB>(1) [R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each a 1 to 6C alkyl or a 2 to 6C alkenyl; (p) is an integer of 0 to 3] and the second agent comprising an organic acid and water and having pH 2 to 5. The hair cosmetic (the second embodiment) comprises the alkoxysilane (1), the organic acid and water, and has pH 2 to 5. The method for treating hair comprises coating the hair with a mixture of the first agent and the second agent in the hair cosmetic (the first embodiment) or making the hair cosmetic (the second embodiment) to permeate a silanol compound (2): R<SP>1</SP><SB>p</SB>Si(OH)<SB>n</SB>(OR<SP>2</SP>)<SB>4-p-n</SB>(2) [(n) is an integer of 1 to (4-p)] produced by hydrolyzing the alkoxysilane (1) into the hair.
