PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device equipped with a cooling device capable of efficiently cooling an optical modulation element, and a projector and a rear projector. SOLUTION: The cooling device 100 is a liquid cooling type cooling device constituted of a pump 10 feeding a cooling medium to a trunk piping part 12, heat conductive containers for respective color light beams 2B, 2R and 2G provided in tight-contact with liquid crystal light valves for respective color light beams 1B, 1R and 1G, a heat radiating plate 16 radiating heat absorbed by the cooling medium, a tank 15 being the reservoir of the cooling medium, and a plurality of piping parts or the like connecting the constitution part thereof. The cooling medium flows in the heat conductive containers for respective color light beams 2B, 2R and 2G after it is branched to the piping parts for respective color light beams 11, 13 and 14 from the trunk piping part 12. The piping part 11 for the light B connected to the heat conductive container 2B for the light B is set so that the cross section of its channel may be larger than those of the piping parts 13 and 14 for other color light beams.
