Producing fertilizer pellets comprises performing the following operations in an extrusion apparatus: dewatering manure or compost; adding fertilizer, lubricating and hardening additives; comminuting and mixing in straw; comminuting and mixing in fibers; and extruding and hardening pellets. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for carrying out the above process, comprising a screw extruder with several chopping and mixing stages and a final stage in which the pellets are hardened by directly heating the extrusion die.
