PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safe method for treating water to be treated by which suspended fine particles are crosslinked with one another as flocks of uniform particles in a short time and the sedimentation/separation of flocks is promoted without leaving suspended fine particle behind. SOLUTION: CMC (carboxymethylcellulose) having high viscosity and high etherification degree is used widely, for example, in the fields of foods, medicines and cosmetics. This method for treating the water to be treated by using a crosslinking flocculant comprises a step to add CMC having low viscosity and low etherification degree to the flock-formed aqueous solution, which is obtained at a preceding step to add an inorganic flocculant to the aqueous solution to be treated in an agitated tank to form flocks, so that suspended fine particles are crosslinked/flocculated, flocks are enlarged and the sedimentation velocity of the enlarged flocks is accelerated.
