PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect the one-way clutch and an electric motor of a starter. SOLUTION: This starter 40 comprises the electric motor 41. A motor power from the electric motor 41 is transmitted to a rotating shaft 46 through a speed reduction drive gear 43 and a speed reduction driven gear 47. A pinion 48 is formed on the rotating shaft 46, and the motor power is transmitted from the pinion 48 to a ring gear 45 connected to a crankshaft 12. The one-way clutch 50 is built in the speed reduction driven gear 47 supported on the rotating shaft 46 through a torque limiter 51 to avoid the excessive rotation of the electric motor 41 by the power of an engine. Since the speed reduction driven gear 47 is supported by the torque limiter 51, even if the crankshaft 12 is reversely rotated and the one-way clutch 50 is engaged, a reverse rotation torque outputted from the crankshaft 12 can be reduced and, accordingly, the one-way clutch 50 and the electric motor 41 can be protected.
