Gradation converting means (10) converts, as required, the gradation of an input video signal (100) to output a gradation-converted video signal. Statistical processing means (13) determines the statistics of the fields or frames of the input video signal, and scene change detecting means (16) detects a scene change of the input video signal. Conversion characteristic deciding means (22) decides a gradation conversion characteristic based on the output of the statistical processing means (13) and on the output of the scene change detecting means (16). This gradation correction can enhance, independently of the contents of images, the contrast and the speed of the responses to changes in the contents of the images.
