A method for controlling at least one burner in a thermal engine, especially in a gas turbine engine, e.g. for electricity generation, has sensors (4) in and around the pre-burn chamber (1) and on the fuel and air supply ducts (2. 3) to monitor a range of operating parameters and enabling a process control (5) to run the engine with optimum efficiency and with minimum emission products. The monitored parameters include; burn chamber temperature, flow rates for air and fuel, pressure variations in burn chamber, flame temperature, exhaust gas sampling etc. The control includes safety monitoring, e.g. to prevent flame return and overheating.
