PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical semiconductor device which is small in size and has an excellent hermetical sealing reliability. SOLUTION: An optical semiconductor device 8 comprises an optical semiconductor element having a light receiver 1a formed on its upper surface, an insulating base material 2 formed as a frame surrounding the optical semiconductor element 1 and having an inside surface mounted to the side surface of the element 1, wiring conductors 3 externally led from the periphery of the part of the insulating base material 2 mounted to the element 1 and electrically connected to the element 1, and a translucent lid 6 mounted on the upper surface of the insulating base material 2 for hermetically sealing the light receiver 1a of the element 1.
