<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide image forming apparatus and method capable of performing scanning control of a light beam well using a photosensor without imposing a damage to a latent image carrier. <P>SOLUTION: Prior to lighting a laser light source, amplitude of a deflector is set at a minimum level or above by causing resonance oscillation of the deflector based on initial driving conditions corresponding to the deflector prestored in a storage section. Subsequently, the laser light source is lighted. Consequently, the light beam passes at least through a horizontal synchronous sensor in scanning already at the lighting time of the laser light source. Concentration of the light beam on a part of a photosensitive body can thereby be prevented and deterioration of the photosensitive body can be prevented surely. Furthermore, a scanning light beam passes through the horizontal synchronous sensor and a horizontal synchronous signal is outputted surely from the horizontal synchronous sensor.
