The invention concerns a procedure for protecting at least one piece of sensitive data on a chip card e.g. faulty operation counter or access condition for pin-check, against an attack, in particular DFA attack, on the data carrier. The protected, sensitive data controls or influences the access to the data carrier. The inventive method creates two copies of data X, optionally one in a falsified form f(X). The two copies are being compared, e.g. in two registers RL, RH. With a positive comparison result data X is accepted as valid data, and with a negative comparison result the data is rejected and considered invalid.
