摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable power optical system which performs variable power by rotating an optical functional surface thereby changing a position where luminous flux passes through the optical functional surface and whose variable power ratio is made high while it is kept compact and its aberration is kept well. SOLUTION: The variable power optical system is equipped with one or more optical elements 10 and 20 having at least one optical functional surface 11, 12, 13, 21, 22 and 23 nearer to an object side and an image side than a diaphragm 2 respectively, and forms the image of a far object O at a changing magnification. At least one optical functional surface 12 and one optical functional surface 22 of the respective optical elements 10 and 20 are constituted of a continuous plane, and constituted in shape where the radius of curvature in a cross-sectional direction, at least, is consecutively changed from one end toward the other end of a cross section, and at least one optical element 10 and one optical element 20 on the object side and the image side are rotated in the same direction centering on points S1 and S2 which do not come into contact with the one optical functional surface to thereby perform the variable power.
