The invention aim at finding intermediates useful in the synthesis of pyrazo le- fused ring derivatives (such as 7-phenylpyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine derivatives) and a process for the production thereof. A process for the production of compounds represented by the general formula (II), salts thereof, or solvate s of both, characterized by reacting a compound represented by the general formula (I) with an organometallic reagent and then reacting the resulting product with pentafluoroiodobenzene: wherein Z¹ and Z ² are each independently a methine group or a nitrogen atom; R^{1< /sup> is ethyl or the like; R5 is hydrogen or the like; and R& lt;sup>2} and R³ are each independently C_1-6 alkyl or the like.
