PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for providing substantially uniform and homogeneous polarization, and also provide a method therefor. SOLUTION: A substantially unpolarized beam is provided from a conventional type light source. The unpolarized beam is converted into at least four real images using a light pipe and a suitable lens. Each of the real images has a bright area and one or more dark areas in a first image plane. A part of the beam from the bright area in each of the real images is directed to the one or a plurality of the dark areas in each of the real images by a polarization dependence method, and the changed image becomes a single image of the substantially polarized beam.
