PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing optical fibers which is a method of making a core rod and a clad tube one body and drawing them when drawing an optical fiber having a multi-component glass as core, and by which optical fibers can be manufactured without generating an outer diameter variation and a sudden breakage, and an optical fiber having a multi-component glass core. SOLUTION: The core rod consisting of the multi-component glass and the clad tube consisting of a silica containing an additive are drawn while making them one body when drawing optical fibers. By making the clad tube consist of the additive-containing silica, the viscosity is lowered enabling the drawing at a lower temperature than before, so that the occurrence of gasification of a core material or the like is eliminated, and the occurrence of bubbles and breaking of a wire can be avoided.
