A method for treating the water containing ammonia nitrogen which comprises introducing a raw water containing ammonia nitrogen to a nitrification vessel, wherein a carbonate and/or bicarbonate is added to the nitrification vessel (1), and the concentration of an inorganic carbon in the nitrification vessel (1) is maintained at a level of 35 mg-C/L or more, to thereby carry out a stable nitrite type nitrification at a high load by the action of ammonia oxidation bacteria through the suppression of the conversion of nitrite nitrogen to a nitrate due to the inhibition by ammonia nitrogen, and introducing the resultant nitrified fluid to a denitrification vessel, to carry out denitrification by the action of denitrifying bacteria which undergo a denitrification reaction using the remaining ammonia nitrogen as an electron donor and nitrite nitrogen as an electron acceptor. |
