<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stable user interface for a computer that eliminates the need for a user to move his or her hand by using facial gestures as a switch. <P>SOLUTION: In the user interface, the position of an eye is extracted within a target image area (S402); the average value of brightnesses (average density of pixels) within a predetermined area around the eye is calculated (S406); based on comparison between the average value and information about the image including the eye previously registered in a storage device, the conditions of the eye as to whether it is open or closed and its line of sight, are detected (S418-S428).
