PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optimization method for reducing residual stress and residual moment in a multipass straightening with a roller leveler. SOLUTION: The n-th pass straightening is beforehand performed by predicting the residual moment distribution M(n-1) in the inside of a material to be straightened after the (n-1)th pass straightening, further, predicting the residual moment distribution M(n) after the n-th pass straightening from the residual moment distribution M(n-1) and the target value C(n) of reduction setting at the n-th pass, determining the range C'(n) of the target value C(n) of the reduction setting where ¾ Mmax(n-1) ¾ > ¾ Mmax(n) ¾, ¾ Mmin(n-1) ¾ > ¾ Mmin(n) ¾ are materialized in the relationship of the absolute values of the maximum value Mmax(n) and the minimum value Mmin(n) of the moment in the residual moment distribution M(n) and the absolute values of the maximum value Mmax(n-1) and the minimum value Mmin(n-1) in the residual moment distribution M(n-1) and deciding the reduction setting value C<SB>0</SB>(n) from this range C'(n).
