METHOD FOR MOTION ESTIMATION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fast and effective method for motion estimation adopting a spider-web search method to identify a reference macro-block.

SOLUTION: The method includes: a step (a) of determining neighbors depending on the density of a sub-area wherein a currently selected macro-block is located; a step (b) of identifying a neighbor as the currently selected macro-block if one of the distortions between the neighbor and a coded macro-block is smallest; a step (c) of repeating the steps (a) and (b) until the currently selected macro-block has the smallest distortion among the neighbors; a step (d) of re-defining the search area according to the density of a sub-area wherein the currently selected macro-block is located; a step (e) of repeating the steps (a) to (d) until the currently selected macro-block having the smallest distortion is located into the sub-area having the maximum density; and a step (f) of identifying the currently selected macro-block having the smallest distortion and located in the sub-area having the maximum density as a reference macro-block.
