An automobile door swings on a hinge and is arrested at the outward limit of travel by a stay rod (2) with a head (8). The stay rod slides through (16) a collar (3). The circular corner between the head and rod incorporates an angled gusset (11) set at an angle alpha. At full extension the angled gusset (11) engages with a countersink groove in the collar (15) surface. The countersink groove is set at a different angle beta. The difference between alpha and beta creates dampening friction on closure.
