A sleeve valve 14, Fig. 2, can be moved longitudinally by means of a servomotor piston 18 into the position shown to close the flow path between guide vanes 9 and the runner 2 of a hydraulic turbine, pump or pump-turbine. Air is then introduced, e.g., into the space 7, to drain the water from the machine, so that the machine can be run dry. It is then necessary to introduce water through pipes 21, 22 to cool the runner seals 10, 11. This water is flung centrifugally by the runner 2 against a conical inner wall 24 of the sleeve valve 14 and moves centrifugally along the wall 24 and thence through ports 28 to a drain duct 23. When the sleeve valve is in its open position, a shoulder 29 abuts a seat 27 to close the drain duct 23. A helical groove may be provided in the wall 24 to assist in moving the cooling water along the wall, and the latter may then be cylindrical instead of conical. The machine may have a vertical shaft. In a modification Fig. (not shown), the ports 28 are eliminated, and the conical wall (24) extends the entire length of the sleeve valve (14) to direct the cooling water to a drain duct (23) located at the right-hand end of the machine. In a further modification, Fig.3 (not shown), the drain duct (23) is closed, not by the sleeve valve (14) but by a separate stop valve (30). |
