The invention relates to a light guide system (1) comprising a hollow light guide (2) and a light source (3) positioned to direct light into the light guide (2) from one end (4), the light guide (2) having light-guiding walls that cause the light to travel in the space within the light guide (2) towards the other end (5) thereof; and, in the space within the light guide (2), at least one light- extracting element (650, 660) having at least one curved surface that functions as a non-transmissive specular or narrow- or wide-scattering reflector, the curved reflecting surface(s) being shaped so that light from the source that is reflected therefrom will inpinge on a light- guiding wall of the light guide (2) at such an angle as to emerge from the light guide (2).
