PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for electrochemical display that can suppress variation in display density (reflection factor) of write pixels and erasure pixels when cycles of image writing and erasure are repeated without making cycles of image rewriting long. SOLUTION: This electrochemical display device is provided with a transparent electrode and a counter electrode which are arranged opposite each other and an electrolyte layer which is held between the transparent electrode and counter electrode and contains ions of metal, and is configure to write an image by applying a write voltage between the transparent electrode and counter electrode and depositing metal on the transparent electrode side, erase the image by applying an erasure voltage having the opposite polarity from the write voltage between the transparent electrode and counter electrode and dissolving the metal deposited on the transparent electrode side, and initialize the potential difference between the transparent electrode and counter electrode into a specified range before the write voltage is applied after the erasure voltage is applied.
