Gaseous substance containing sulfuric anhydride is contacted with organic porous material to obtain sulfonated organic porous material having 0.5 mg.equivalent/g (on dry basis) of sulfonic acid groups. The organic porous material has mesopores on the walls of interconnected macropores and median radius of 0.01-100 mu m and total pore volume of 1-50 ml/g.
