METHOD OF APPLYING COATINGS WITH A METALLIC OR CERAMIC FINISH

The invention relates to a coating with a metallic or ceramic finish which is applied to all or part of the surface of a thermoplastic, metallic or metal alloy article. The inventive method comprises the following steps consisting in: (a) preparing the thermoplastic, metallic or metal alloy article; (b) applying a polymer layer to the article, which is based on aqueous dispersions of resins that are free of volatile organic components or dispersions in organic solvents of resins that are free of urethane; (c) curing said polymer layer; and (d) depositing a single layer of a metallic or ceramic material on the article that has been coated with the cured polymer layer. According to the invention, the polymer layer is cured in step (c) at a temperature of between 30 and 80 DEG C in the case of thermal polymer layers or by means of ultraviolet radiation in the case of photosensitive polymer layers. Said coating imparts the articles with the desired metallic or ceramic appearance, as well as resistance to chemical corrosion, external stresses owing to climate changes and mechanical friction caused by daily use.
