PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve startability of an engine by improving certainty of a piston of a cylinder in an intake stroke passing the first compression top dead center at the stop of the engine. SOLUTION: The engine is restarted by supplying fuel to a cylinder in an expansion stroke at the automatic stop of the engine to carry out ignition and combustion. This engine starter is provided with a crank angle sensor for detecting the piston position of each cylinder; a throttle valve for adjusting an intake quantity led into each cylinder; and a control means for controlling the throttle valve based on a detection result from the crank angle sensor. The control means controls an intake quantity adjusting means to obtain an intake quantity more than an intake quantity during idling operation in a restart unstable period from the restart of the engine until the piston in the cylinder in the intake stroke passing the first compression top dead center at the stop of the engine.
