PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device capable of supplying polarized light oscillated in a prescribed direction, with high light use efficiency and a projector using the same. SOLUTION: The light source device has; a light emitting part 201 for supplying light; a phase plate 204 for converting a polarization state of light from the light emitting part 201; a reflective polarizer 205 which transmits polarized light oscillated in a prescribed direction out of light from the phase plate 204 and reflects polarized light oscillated in directions other than the prescribed direction; and a reflection part 202 which is provided in the periphery of the light emitting part 201 and reflects light which is reflected by the reflective polarizer 205 and is transmitted through the phase plate 204. The reflection part 202 is provided in the proximity to the phase plate 204 and guides light which is reflected by the reflective polarizer 205 and is transmitted through the phase plate 204, to the phase plate 204.
