A device for regulating the speed of ships powered 'by a reaction propulsion system in which a pump discharges water into an outlet jet comprises means to vary the rotational speed of the pump, means to vary the shape of the outlet jet so as to modify the propulsion thrust of the system and means to relate the two aforesaid varying means so as to achieve optimum operating conditions. The instrumentation may be mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic or of any conventional type and may be automatically or manually controlled. In the case of manual control the operator adjusts the pump speed or the jet cross-section on reading the predetermined curve or indicator chart. Under automatic control an automatic regulator works out the optimum value of the quantity to be adjusted.</p> |
